Chlorine or Calcium hypochlorite is a chemical compound that has the chemical formula Ca(ClO)2. Chlorine is usually used as a water disinfectant. This compound is relatively stable and has more free chlorine than sodium hypochlorite (liquid bleach). Calcium hypochlorite is a white solid, although commercial preparations appear yellow. Smells strongly of chlorine, as it decomposes slowly in moist air. It is very poorly soluble in water and is mostly used in low to medium hardness water. This compound is available in two forms, anhydrous and hydrate.
